One of the larger hotels of the area, this Serena lodge has a big advantage over much of the other options of the area, the location – on the crater rim with some of the most breath-taking views of anywhere in Africa. A good proportion of accommodation for the area is based in the nearby village of Karatu, 30-40 minutes from the crater floor so this is a big selling point and certainly worth considering if stunning views are your thing. Being a larger accommodation, the lodge lacks some character and can attract group tours but, in our opinion, this is worth it for the views of the crater. The main lodge includes a restaurant, bar, souvenir shop and small spa.

Rooms here are African in design, colourful and pleasant, perfectly functional and comfortable. All of the 75 rooms are en-suite with plenty of facilities such as WiFi, tea and coffee, safe and private balconies looking into the crater. While we would often find ourselves looking for alternatives to some of the larger hotels this is one of them that we can hand to heart say is a great choice. It is a big hotel, some might say corporate, it might attract some groups but look passed that, the location on the crater rim is jaw-dropping and gives early access for game drives. Not for everyone but those that do stay enjoy the big plus points.
