There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe the natural beauty and wonder of the Ngorongoro crater. With 25,000 large animals calling the crater home, it is a must-see destination in northern Tanzania. Formed from a collapsed volcano, this vast caldera has a diameter of 16-19 kilometres and offers one of the richest wildlife viewing experiences on the African continent. Regular sightings include large tusker elephants, lions, leopards and hyenas along with wildebeest, buffalo and zebra to name a few. There is also a healthy population of black rhino which affords the opportunity of seeing the ‘big 5’ in one game drive.
Named as one of the seven wonders of the African continent, scenically stunning with incredible wildlife, it is understandable that the area does get busy during peak holiday periods. Nevertheless, with such a rewarding all-round experience, it would be a shame to pass this by.
