In a prime location in Stone Town, the Seyyida, a former royal palace, is a firm favourite with the Holiday Architects team. The history of this 3-star plus hotel dates back to the Omani rule of East Africa and overlooks the resting place of former sultans as well as offering some of the most beautiful ocean views from some of the rooms and rooftop terrace. Zanzibar has become an ethnic and cultural melting pot, and this is reflected in the art collection at the hotel which includes handcrafted textiles, paintings and oriental furniture.
The building’s architecture is very impressive with marble floors, ancient walls and courtyard garden having been beautifully restored with the building now a story of arches, beautiful woodwork and delightful gardens. The roof top terrace is a particularly pleasant place to spend time, take a breath and enjoy the setting sun with a cocktail or several.
The 17 en-suite rooms continue the theme of the hotel with hand carved furniture and traditional soft décor with modern amenities such as satellite tv, air-conditioning and WiFi. Overall this is a lovely option and we feel that the hotel gets you in the spirit of Stone Town and ready to head out and explore.
