Day 1
Fly overnght to Kilimanjaro airport.
Day 2
You will be met on arrival, by private vehicle and driver and taken straight to your hotel where you can rest after your flights.
Day 3
Picnic lunch in tow, and following a private vehicle and driver transfer to the nearby airport you depart on your light aircraft flight to Katavi via a fuel stop en route. This flight can take 5-6 hours depending on the route so be sure to take a good book with you. You will be met on arrival and then game drive to your safari camp.
Day 4
Welcome to the wilderness that is Katavi, you have the next two days to enjoy morning and afternoon safari activities from your camp. Don't expect to see many other people but, expect to see fantastic wildlife.
Day 5
Katavi is well known for huge pods of hippo, cave dweling crocodile and some of the largest gatherings of buffalo in Africa and you have the morning and afternoon to explore different areas of the park. You may also see leopard, lion and wild dog so keep a keen out for anything moving in the bushes.
Day 6
You will game drive to the airstrip this morning for your light aircraft flight to Mahale. This is a much shorter flight of around one hour and the landing at Mahale between the mountains is something else! You will be met at the airstrip and then take the boat transfer to the lodge where you can settle in and relax, perhaps enjoy an afternoon on a sun lounger.
Day 7
Day at leisure to enjoy activities from your lodge. The obvious main attraction of Mahale is the M group of habituated chipanzees. Treks into the forest can last anywhere between 2 and 7 hours so being prepared with the right kit is pretty key but the experience is incredibly rewarding.
Day 8
Another day to enjoy activities in Mahale, each trek into the forest is going to be different with the chimps covering a large area on a daily basis. When you do find them they come very close to you and it is something that will never leave you, magical!
Day 9
There are also a host of other activities on offer at Mahale including gentle walks into the forest (taking a dip into waterfall fed rock pools is divine) as well as kayaking, boat cruising and bird and butterfly spotting. This is a truly magical place, take time to enjoy it.
Day 10
After breakfast you will head back to the airstrip for your flight back to Arusha via a fuel stop on the way. You will be met on arrival and then transferred to your accommodation for the night.
Day 11
You will be picked up a little later this morning and taken back to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Pemba island departing at around 12.45 and arriving in Pemba at 15.00. You will be met on arrival and then driven to your beach lodge where you can settle in and relax, and relax you will, perhaps with a cocktail in hand!
Day 12
Day at leisure to enjoy the empty, powder white sandy beached and crystal clear waters of the indian ocean. Perhaps enjoy a dive today.
Day 13
Manta resort is fully inclusive which even includes a free 30 minute spa treatment every day and we can recommend the spa for further treatments. This is a small spa but with an open treatment room with ocean views this is a divine place for a treatment or two.
Day 14
Activities available on Pemba include diving in the amazing Pemba channel, some of the best diving in the Indian Ocean, as well as snorkelling, deep sea fishing, snorkelling and kayak safaris.
Day 15
Inland activities include local village walks, guided tours through the ancient Ngezi forest and spice farm tours. Or, you could just sit back and relax, the choice is yours!
Day 16
You will have some more time at leisure this morning before being picked and taken back to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Dar es Salaam. On arrival you can check in for your flights back to the UK.

If you like the idea of exploring the remote and unspoilt wilderness with some of the most interesting wildlife anywhere in Africa, then this sample itinerary offers that in abundance. With light aircraft flights operating just twice a week and taking six or seven hours to get to Katavi, it is little wonder that so few visit these breathtaking places. Mahale is just a further one hour and 20 minutes from Katavi and then the onward journey to the little-known Pemba island features an overnight stop en route.

Can it be worth all of the travelling? Without a doubt, yes. Katavi is renowned for playing host to some of the largest gatherings of buffalo and hippo on the planet, with a further mix of prey and predator including lions, hyenas, elephants, topi, giraffes and cave dwelling crocodiles to name but a few. Mahale is beautiful: set on the edge of a vast lake with thick forested mountains behind, it is home to a 60-strong troop of chimpanzees that are well habituated to human contact. Trekking through the virgin jungle to find the chimps is an adventure in itself and is an incredibly moving experience.

The itinerary finishes with a stay on Pemba Island and, despite only taking 20 minutes by light aircraft to reach from Zanzibar, it feels like another world. Think deserted, powder-white sandy beaches, crystal clear Indian ocean and some of the best snorkelling and diving in the archipelago, providing the perfect finish such a phenomenal itinerary.
